Join as a Prospective Graduate Student
The UCLA NLP group doesn’t directly admit graduate students. If you’re interested in joining the group (as a PhD or Masters Student), you need to apply through departments associated with one of our faculty members, such as the Computer Science Department or the Communication Department. Strong applications should highlight the applicant’s research experience, their fit within the program they apply to, display engagement with the research conducted here at UCLA, and provide recommendation letters from writers that can attest to the applicant’s capabilities. (Tip: Consult faculty websites each year to learn who has advising capacity for new students.) Note that admissions are conducted by the whole department, which means that you need to present your applications in a way that it appeals and addresses the department’s program more broadly. Since admissions are conducted through the departments, please direct any questions about the application process to the respective graduate admission websites.

If you’re interested in working on research projects within the NLP group, directly contact an NLP Group faculty member of your choice with your research interest. Inquiries should at the least include a CV, your research interests, and connections to the faculty member’s research.
